From August 22nd to 23rd, 2024, the School of Economics and Management held the 2024 Summer Camp for Outstanding University Students. The camp aimed to foster academic exchange among top university students, ignite their interest in scientific research, expand their academic horizons, and identify research-oriented talents with both strong academic performance and good character. Over 450 students from universities across China applied, and after a rigorous evaluation process, 116 students were selected to participate.
The opening ceremony took place at 9:30 a.m. on August 22 in Classroom 21B3100. The ceremony was presided over by Li Wanhong, Vice Dean in charge of teaching. MA Yonghong, Director of the Department of Economics; LIU Weiwei, Director of the Department of Business Administration; LI Bing, Director of the Department of Management Engineering; and GAO Luan, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Administration, along with teacher representatives, the Teaching Affairs Office, and the participants attended the ceremony.
At the opening ceremony, Vice Dean LI Wanhong provided an overview of the school, discussing its history, academic disciplines, faculty teams, research platforms, and achievements in talent cultivation. He also outlined the camp's schedule and the expectations for the comprehensive interviews. MA Yonghong, Liu Weiwei, Li Bing, and GAO Luan introduced their respective disciplines: Applied Economics, Business Administration, Management Science and Engineering, and Public Administration, offering a warm welcome to the students attending the camp.
Later that afternoon, at 1:00 p.m. on August 22, the four departments organized discipline-specific orientation presentations and teacher-student exchange sessions. In the Department of Economics, the session was moderated by Associate Dean WANG Keda, who, alongside BU Yan, presented academic reports on "Monetary Policy Uncertainty, Asset Allocation, and Systemic Risks of Commercial Banks" and "The Application of Cutting-edge Research Methods in Economics to Practical Issues." The Department of Management Engineering's session was chaired by CAO Jing, with presentations by TANG Shulin, ZHANG Haifeng, NA Qi, and HU Yuzhen on the fields of Management System Engineering, Information Management and Information Systems, Data Mining and Business Intelligence, and Industrial Engineering. In the Department of Business Administration, LIU Weiwei, the department head, introduced topics such as the Finance and Accounting track, the "Innovation Management Research" team of the Xinghai Academic Team, and the "Green Technology Management and Technology Entrepreneurship" Research Center. In the Department of Public Administration, Associate Director GAO Luan led presentations by Yang Guibin, CHEN Wei, and SUN Xibo on Higher Education Management, Public Policy and Decision-making, and Urban Governance and Emergency Management. Following the sessions, student volunteers guided the campers on a tour of the campus, including the teaching buildings, library, school history museum, and oceanarium, providing them with a deeper understanding of Harbin Engineering University’s history and resources.
On August 23rd, experts conducted comprehensive interviews to assess the participants' academic proficiency, research capabilities, and overall qualities. As a result, 81 students were awarded the title of "Distinguished Campers," while 35 students were named "Outstanding Campers."
The summer camp proved to be an excellent platform for meaningful interaction between students and faculty, fostering communication and exchange among high-achieving undergraduates from various universities. Since its inception in 2022, the School of Economics and Management has successfully organized three summer camps, making them an integral part of its strategy to broaden postgraduate recruitment channels. The initiative plays a vital role in attracting top-tier candidates from across the nation and advancing the school’s efforts in postgraduate enrollment.
