On November 10th, 2023, at 2:00 PM, the School of Economics and Management held a training session for graduate supervisors in Conference Room 202, Building 31. The purpose of the meeting was to enhance the skills and capabilities of graduate supervisors and promote the high-quality development of graduate education. The session was chaired by Assistant Dean LIU Tiansen and featured senior graduate supervisors Professor LI Baizhou and Professor LI Tuochen as keynote speakers. All graduate supervisors, along with academic affairs office staff, attended the meeting.

The session began with a keynote address by Professor LI Tuochen, titled "Reflections on the Competence of Graduate Student Supervisors in the New Era." Professor LI systematically analyzed the essential qualities and pathways for self-improvement that graduate supervisors should cultivate. He discussed key aspects of the research and training process, the importance of supervisors developing self-awareness, and the critical stages of guiding students. He emphasized that graduate supervisors should focus on enhancing their knowledge, skills, traits, and overall competencies.
Next, Professor LI Baizhou delivered a keynote speech entitled "Reflections on the Responsibilities of Graduate Supervisors in the New Era." Drawing on his years of experience in graduate education, he shared valuable insights on the roles and responsibilities of graduate supervisors. He outlined the significance of supervisors in shaping students' lifelong learning, systematic thinking, innovation, self-management, and teamwork abilities. Professor LI stressed that the true value of a graduate supervisor lies in fostering these core skills in students.
Both professors shared personal experiences with their own mentors and reflected on the impact that supervisors have on students’ growth. They agreed that, while graduate supervisors may only accompany students for a few years, their influence is profound and lasting. For them, the greatest honor and fulfillment comes from witnessing the continuous development and progress of their students. The attending faculty members gained valuable insights from the professors’ sharing, which strengthened their commitment to nurturing high-quality graduate students.
To conclude the meeting, Assistant Dean HU Yuzhen emphasized the importance of scientific research and academic integrity education in the graduate training process. She urged all supervisors to remain vigilant in preventing academic misconduct. Assistant Dean LIU Tiansen also provided an interpretation of the university’s latest "Management Measures for Graduate Supervisor Positions" at Harbin Engineering University.
